DCC & Shell Aviation Denmark has activities across the entire country, with eight Danish airports and one on the Faroe Islands. Additionally, we manage tasks for airports and airlines in Greenland. Our responsibilities include the delivery of aviation fuel as well as consulting services, certifying, and managing key aspects of the fuel infrastructure in partnership with our customers and partners.
Below, you can learn more about the types of fuels we provide to our customers in Denmark.
Conventional jet fuel — JET A-1
Jet A-1 is a petroleum-based fuel used by jet engine aircraft. It is the most widely utilised type of aviation fuel today. The fuel has a flash point of minimum 38°C (100°F) and freezes at temperatures as low as -47°C. The key specifications for Jet A-1 include the UK specification DEF STAN 91-91 (Jet A-1), NATO code F-35 (formerly DERD 2494), and the ASTM specification D1655 (Jet A-1). While Jet A-1 is primarily used in jet engine aircraft, it is also compatible with certain diesel engine aircraft.

Bio-based SAF (Sustainable Aviation Fuel)
SAF, or Sustainable Aviation Fuel, is a collective term for non-fossil aviation fuels, also known as Synthetic Paraffinic Kerosene. Today, SAF is primarily produced from waste biomass, such as used cooking oil.
One of SAF’s key advantages is that it can be used seamlessly across the entire global fleet of aircraft. However, it is not yet approved by engine manufacturers for 100% usage. As a result, SAF is classified as a drop-in fuel, meaning it can be blended with conventional Jet A-1 fuel at ratios of up to 50%.

PtX-based SAF (Power-to-X)
There are high expectations within the aviation industry that eSAF (electro-synthetic aviation fuel), produced at scale, will play a crucial role in the necessary green transition. This is also true in Denmark, where a number of promising PtX (Power-to-X) projects are underway and have the potential to produce eSAF from sustainable energy sources such as wind and solar power.
At present, it is not yet possible to supply Danish aviation with eSAF. However, at DCC & Shell Aviation, we expect to be among the first to offer eSAF once production begins in the coming years.
For this reason, we are actively supporting the Danish PtX industry. For instance, in Vordingborg, the company Arcadia is planning a large-scale facility for the production of eSAF. At the same time, we are in close dialogue with various stakeholders in the new industry through our membership of Green Power Denmark’s PtX Partnership.
